The report categorizes some major issues affecting the economic performance of New England's domestic fishery and examines whether and how varying approaches to intra-industry cooperation could be applied to manage problems better and capitalize on economic opportunities. The report is a highly summarized synthesis of research that includes: a critical review of the extensive literature on seafood and other food marketing, including scientific reports, trade publications, published and unpublished primary data; interviews with seafood industry practitioners, retail and restaurant specialists, and other food industry marketeers; a survey and analysis of the organizational characteristics, budgets, objectives and accomplishments of numerous marketing groups representing other food industries; and a survey of fisheries representative organizations in New England.
