A program undertaken to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of a process for separating oxygen from air is described. A liquid oxygen-complexing absorbent selectively binds oxygen from air and subsequently releases it to produce 98% to 99% oxygen. Analysis reveals that the absorbent solution can be distinguished from other oxygen-complexing materials previously investigated by its relative stability, reasonable cost, rapid complexation/decomplexation kinetics, and its ability to bind and release oxygen at convenient temperatures and pressures. Cost estimates indicate that the process compares quite favorably with established oxygen production methods for plant sizes from about 10 tons to 200 tons per day.
