This assessment will focus on a closed-loop blood glucose control device (CBGCD). The CBGCD is a hospital bedside device designed for short-term management of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (Type I). The device has been referred to as an artificial endocrine pancreas or artificial beta-cell that temporarily infuses insulin for a dysfunctional pancreas. It consists of a rapid on-line glucose analyzer, a computer with a controller for the calculation and control of the infusion of either insulin or dextrose, and a multichannel infusion system. In addition, it contains a printer designed to record glucose values on almost a minute-to-minute basis and to provide cumulative totals of the substances infused.
