Long-Term Planning for Research and Diagnosis to Protect U.S. Agriculture from Foreign Animal Diseases and Ectoparasites

Animal diseases and ectoparasites take a terrible toll, cutting dramatically into food supplies in the developing and developed countries and disrupting agricultural trade worldwide. If some of the foreign animal diseases and ectoparasites spread into the United States the costs to protect livestock and public health could run to hundreds of millions of dollars. This report follows a study by a subcommittee to assist USDA in appraising current FAD&E research, biocontainment, and diagnosis and in long-range planning. This study addressed only issues concerning planning for research and diagnostic capability; it did not directly address the regulatory and operational problems of disease prevention, control, and eradication.
