Study of Wind Speed Statistics of 14 Dispersed UK Meteorological Stations with Special Regard to Wind Energy

This report reviews the current UK Meteorological Office techniques for measuring and recording wind speed data, and the methodology for extrapolating wind speed data from one height to another. Using hourly mean data recorded at 14 UK Coastal Meteorological Stations over a period of 9 to 10 years a statistical analysis of the wind speed has been carried out and Weibull parameters calculated. A summary of the extreme hourly mean speeds and gust speeds recorded is presented, as is a limited analysis of the frequency and duration of periods of calm and high wind.
