Study of Precalculation of Effect of Fires on Ventilation System of Mines

Two computer program sections to determine the fume or other contaminant exposures of underground miners were developed. One section deals with the exposure at fixed points of the ventilation system, the second section deals with the exposure of miners traveling along specified escapeways. The feasibility of combining the latter section with an existing mine evacuation program was investigated. The necessary modifications were devised and the evacuation plan and contaminant exposure for 10 miners is presented in detail. In addition, a new program for the nonsteady-state simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires was developed. It is based on the assumption that a nonsteady-state process can be approximated by a sequence of short-duration, steady-state processes.
