Supplemental Driver Safety Program Development. Volume 1. Development Research and Evaluation

This report describes the preparation and evaluation of instructional modules designed to supplement driver education program experiences of young (16-18) drivers. The project was limited to examining five subjects critical to this audience: speed management, alcohol, restraint usage, hazard perception (pedestrian and cyclist hazards only), and energy-efficient driving. Research activities were conducted to determine what should be taught and how knowledges, attitudes, and behaviors should be communicated for maximum effectiveness. Ten instructional modules--3 in the area of alcohol, 4 on restraint usage, and 1 each in the other three content areas--were prepared. Modules were evaluated for their effectiveness.
