Vegetation History of Fort Frederica, Saint Simons Island, Georgia

摘要

This report investigates the vegetation history of Fort Frederica, Saint Simons Island, Georgia, prior to and after English settlement in 1736. Written descriptions of the vegetation by early settlers and colonial records were examined to determine how the landscape looked during the Colonial period, and how present-day vegetation patterns have evolved since that time. The report also discusses the fire regime of the area, and how Indians, settlers, and plantation-era slaves used fire to clear dense vegetation.
