Levels and Recent Trends in Fertility and Mortality in Brazil

During the past decade Brazil has undergone two important demographic changes: (1) fertility decline that had already begun by the time of the 1970 census has continued at what appears to be an ever increasing pace; (2) a household survey program has completed at least 6 nationwide surveys during the 1970-1979 decade all of which explored demographic characteristics of the population. Thus there is a great deal of data on the period since 1970, whereas there is little demographic information for years prior to 1970. Chapter 1 provides detailed descriptions of the sources of demographic data used in the report. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the analytical methods applied in deriving estimates of mortality and fertility. Chapter 4 deals with population growth.
