Conversion to Automated Mail Processing and Nine-Digit Zip Code--A Status Report

The Postal Service intends, as part of a move to a new generation of mail sorting equipment, to expand its five-digit ZIP Code to nine digits, effective October 1, 1983. The Service expects its nine-digit ZIP Code program (ZIP + 4) to save money by reducing personnel costs. This report presents the status of the Service's move to automation and ZIP + 4.
