Nations River and Flood Forecasting and Warning Service

The importance of an effective flood forecasting service cannot be overemphasized. Floods are the largest single cause of natural disasters in the United States. The recent floods in the southeastern United States and the floods in California and the Mississippi River Valley caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. The National Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmosphere report examines the flood services provided by the Department of Commerce through its National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The report provides recommendations for enhanced public safety and reduction of losses through improvements to the services, including expansion of volunteer citizen participation.
