This report discusses the historical background of the Legislative Office of Science Advisor (LOSA) in Michigan. LOSA's six functions and responsibilities include: (1) responding to legislative inquiries for science information; (2) maintaining liaison with the various science communities; (3) developing appropriate library and research resources; (4) identifying potential sources of external funding support for studies of problems facing the state; (5) maintaining an educational component for graduate training in science policy; and (6) identifying emerging problems and issues.
