Tight Gas Sands Log Interpretation: Problem Study

A large undeveloped natural gas resource exists in low-permeability (tight) sandstone reservoirs. Difficulties in reservoir characterization and estimation of production potential in tight gas sands have hindered the development of this resource. Interpretation of tight gas sands reservoirs using conventional log analysis techniques is inadequate. To better understand the limitations of conventional log analysis when applied to tight gas sands, production and core data are compared to log and log-derived data for several different tight gas sands formations. Discrepancies indicate inadequate log interpretation methods. The results of this investigation clearly show a number of geologically dependent interpretation problems related to the complex depositional, diagenetic and structural histories of tight gas sands.
