Overview and Evaluation of Arctic Mine Reclamation

The essence of arctic reclamation is the control of permafrost equilibria, actions which are synonymous with landscape stabilization. Achievement of this goal is possible only if permafrost can be remanufactured following its disruption. Melting is induced following backfilling of permafrost material. Excess ice, as water, which is removed from the spoils, represents a withdrawal of unstable supersaturated soil zones, thereby providing an ice homogenous terrain suitable for the reclamation of non-soil resources. Impure arctic groundwater which is released, must be injected below established permafrost layers to avoid biological contamination and to reduce area wide subsidence.
