Beginning with a brief description of the U.S. machine tool industry and its historical character, this report discusses the present character of the industry including problems in capital formation, instability, and manpower requirements. The report includes a description of machine tool industries in Japan, West Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. The final chapter is a series of policy options addressed to both the public and private sector.
