This monograph focuses on current methodological development for acute inpatient psychiatric beds for children and adolescents. It examines the social context which gives rise to an increasing need for specialized psychiatric services for these population groups. The document also explores some of the conceptual and methodological issues which have impeded the development of widely-accepted methods for determining need or even a consensus among planners and providers about the services that should be provided. Finally, the document reviews and assesses a range of methodologies currently being used to address the need for acute inpatient psychiatric beds for our youth.
