Evaluation of the Pettibone Slashmaster Model 900 for Site Preparation in the Lake States

The demand for wood utilized for fiber and energy continues to increase. From 1980 to year 2000 pulpwood consumption is expected to double. In the Lake States, past logging practices have resulted in large acreages of low-valued small hardwood timber or stands of pioneer species. It is generally recognized that stand conversion requires initial site preparation to reduce competing vegetation and allow adequate survival and growth of planted conifers. To develop economical and biologically feasible site preparation systems, it is important to develop base line data and analysis of the cost, productivity, and effectiveness of mechanical treatment. The report presents an evaluation of the Pettibone Slashmaster Model 900 for site preparation on two different areas.
