Community Action Strategies to Stop Rape

This research-demonstration project, a primary prevention program against rape, tested the hypothesis that, when education is linked with personal involvement through positive action, there is an awareness of rape that has an impact on rape prevention. Programs offering education about rape and training in three action programs to help women respond to threats of assault and to foster community cooperation were presented to target area community groups. The action programs are Whistle Alert, Women's Distress Shelter Houses, and women's self-defense. The overall program was institutionalized in the community by a network of community organizers. Program impact was measured, in part, in two general community surveys and by pre-, post-, and followup data obtained from self-selectors who attend rape prevention workshops.
