Efficiency of Simulation in the Acquisition of Shiphandling Knowledge as a Function of Previous Experience

This study was designed to facilitate the development of a simulator training program which will enable mariners to acquire shiphandling knowledge of the Port of Valdez, Alaska. The amount of training required as a function of the mariner's experience was investigated. The effects of familiarity with ship type, used in simulation, were evaluated. Performance of four groups of masters, separated according to type of experience, was evaluated. Results indicated that performance improved significantly over time for all subjects. However, because groups with no actual Valdez experience failed to reach some asymptotic level of performance, it is suggested that performance feedback be utilized in simulator training to ensure its effectiveness.
