Trends in Northeastern Potato Production and Import-Export Flows to Canada

Linear trend analysis was used to examine regional shifts in U.S. and Canadian potato production. The results indicated a decline in yearly potato production in the Northeast, and a simultaneous and far greater increase in the West during the last 20 years. Production in the Canadian provinces showed slight increases. The model was also used to investigate potato import-export flows through customs districts. In general, imports of Canadian fresh and seed potatoes showed no particular pattern over time; only imports through Portland, Maine exhibited a strong upward trend.
