Some District Agencies Deposit Receipts Timely, Others Need to Improve

The District has no citywide standards or procedures governing the timeliness and frequency for processing agency receipts although such standards are common elsewhere. Some agencies process and deposit receipts with D.C. treasury promptly; other agencies delay processing and depositing the receipts. Lost interest income and control problems, such as receipts becoming lost or stolen or checks becoming stale-dated, may result. GAO recommends to the Mayor that guidelines detailing receipt processing procedures be completed and distributed to District agencies to improve overall receipt processing, and that several agencies take immediate action to improve controls over receipts and increase timeliness of deposits.
