Electrotechnical Industry in the Light of the Rising Sun

A detailed report and analysis of the Japanese electrotechnical industry is provided, based on data collected by a group of Dutch experts during a study trip to Japan. The first section summarizes the economic, sociological, and cultural circumstances necessary to explain and understand present developments in Japan. Particular attention is given to such facets as national character, the educational system, economic structure, and trade policy. A short historical outline of the Japanese electrical and electronics industry is followed by an overview of the present state of affairs. Emphasis is placed on quality control and management. Some specific sectors are then reviewed (e.g., the integrated circuit, computer, consumer electronics, and heavy electrical industries). The case of Hitachi is described as a representative example. Possible near-term future developments are discussed, particularly with regard to consumer electronics, VLSI, computers (the super computer, fifth-generation computers, software), production technology (computer-aided manufacturing, robots, flexible automation), heavy electricals, and telecommunications (including the Hi-Ovis project, data networks, terminals, and glass fibers). Finally, an overview is provided of Japan's strong and weak points.
