摘要

In Newfoundland, on July 15, 1983, a 9.9 meter humpback whale was tagged with a satellite-linked transmitter system. Over a 6-day period, ten locations were determined and 121 duration of dive and transmitter temperatures were monitored. After 6 days, no further information was received by the ARGOS satellite system from the tagged humpback. One of the two subdermal umbrella attachments was improperly deployed due to a defective attachment cartridge. Being poorly anchored, it is suspected that the tag fell off after the sixth day. Although not a complete success, the experiment demonstrated the feasibility of satellite monitoring radio of tagged whales.
