The purpose of the project was to develop data that could be used to evaluate the feasibility of using inorganic oxides to treat domestic wastewater for reuse. This was done by conducting batch equilibrium experiments and jar tests using selected inorganic oxides (alumina, magnesia, silica). Removals of gross organic matter (TOC), specific toxic organics (chloroform, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, endrin), specific toxic inorganics (lead, chromium) and phosphate were measured. A biologically treated domestic wastewater that had been lime coagulated and freeze-concentrated was used. Alumina and granular activated carbon (GAC) were found to remove TOC, chromium, and lead.
