Derivatives for Lignin for Use in Well Drilling Fluids

Two graft copolymers, poly (lignin-g-acrylamide) and poly (lignin-g-(acrylamide-sodium acrylate) were synthesized and tested as additives for drilling muds. Results show these copolymers deflocculate mud clays, thin the mud, and reduce water loss at 250 degrees F. The report presents a possible mechanism of the reaction, the synthesis procedure, the optimization of the synthesis procedure, the assays of the product, results supporting graft copolymerization, and tests in drilling muds of the product.
