External Infusion Pump for Heparin

The Office of Health Technology Assessment (OHTA) emphasizes three basic principles in its assessment activities: (1) broad and open participation both within and outside of the Federal government, (2) reliance on the expertise and research abilities of outside organizations and individuals, and (3) broad dissemination of assessment reports. The assessment focuses on the external infusion pump for heparin. There is a strong consensus that the external infusion of heparin by pump is an effective and safe procedure. The conclusion is supported by a number of well-designed studies as well as by the professional opinion of knowledgeable organizations. Careful management of the drug is necessary to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding or recurrence of thromboembolic complications but these considerations are largely independent of the overall advisability of the use of the external infusion pump, which is a safe and effective procedure.
