VERDAT and Four Local Verification Routines: TEM, BRI, REL, AV

The AFOS era national verification program (AEV) is now in operation at all WSFOs. AEV by itself provides no usable, real time verification feedback of forecasts to WSFO forecasters. The programs documented here do provide such information from the forecasts and observations that are decoded and stored by AEV. The first program, called VERDAT, archives data from AEV into a file called VDATA. Four applications programs REL, BRI, TEM, and AV access VDATA and are designed to provide local station and individual verification statistics of probability of precipitation (POP), maximum and minimum temperature, ceiling, and visibility forecasts in real time. The programs produce reliability diagrams of POPs, brierscores, average errors and biases of temperature forecasts and various statistics dealing with ceiling and visibility forecasts.
