Impulse Contribution to Total Worker Noise Dose

The contribution of impulse noise to total occupational noise exposure was evaluated. Impulse noise from four different industrial processes (forging, sheet metal stamping, coin blanking, and barrel recycling) was measured. Measurements were made with condenser microphones and amplifiers. The percentage of total noise due to impulse noise was 63.7 percent for barrel recycling, 50.0 percent for forging, 36.7 percent for stamping, and 65.3 percent for coin blanking. The author concludes that elimination of impulse components from occupational environments as stipulated in recent judicial decisions underestimates exposure to noise.
