Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) Habitat Suitability Model

A breeding and winter habitat suitability index (HSI) model is developed for the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). The HSI model framework follows the Habitat Evaluation Procedures (HEP) developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Overall habitat suitability is defined in terms of seasonal habitat, species life requisites and the environmental attributes that quantify each cover type's potential for satisfying specific life requisites. A review of literature on pheasant habitat requirements is presented, followed by a general year-round HSI model. This general model is then modified to account for habitat characteristics in the East High area of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, Washington.
