Labor Shortages in Egyptian Agriculture

Egyptian and foreign observers are divided on whether or not there is actually an agricultural labor shortage in Egypt and if there is, what the proper policy response should be. To shed some light on the subject, five villages in Sharqiyya were surveyed in 1979, 182 households were interviewed. The paper presents the results of the survey. A logit model was used to estimate the probability of an individual's entering the hired agricultural labor force, depending his socioeconomic characteristics, e.g., literacy was associated with a low probability of entry.
