Tomato Sauce Production and Consumption in Egypt: A Regression Analysis for 1968-1972

Domestic production and consumption of tomato sauce in Egypt quadrupled over the 15 year period between 1968 and 1982. A predictive device would be useful to forecast future patterns. Although sufficient data are not available to estimate supply and demand relationships for tomato sauce, regression analysis can be used to study more precisely how production and consumption have changed. Accordingly, twelve linear equations were fitted by ordinary least squares: Five used production as the dependent variable; seven used consumption. The independent variables used alternately or all together included per capita income, consumption of fresh tomatoes, consumer price for canned tomato sauce, a trend, and a shift variable to account for an abrupt change in production and consumption levels between 1977 and 1978.
