Cultural Resources Assessment of Confederate Pinto Battery Later Renamed Battery Gladden, Battery Gladden Lighthouse, Alabama Site Number 1M617 and the Adjacent Areas on or Near Pinto Island on the East Side of Mobile River, Mobile County, Alabama

Battery Gladden is a Civil War fortification first known as Battery Pinto, located in Mobile Bay, Alabama. The site as it exists today consists of a pattern of pilings barely exposed above the water level of the Bay. The report consists of a chronological resume of activity at the site, beginning with its first mention in Confederate Engineering Officers journals. A field reconnaissance was conducted to determine the original pattern of the fortifications and later construction of a lighthouse on the site. Cultural remains are probably buried beneath the Bay and were not recovered. The report includes photographs (aerial, ground, and detail views) of the site, maps, and measured drawings of the existing conditions and conjectural reconstructions of the plans of the batteries.
