Use of frequency hopping is compared to conventional frequency modulation and amplitude compandered single sideband in a typical large cell land mobile radio system such as might serve a large metropolitan area. The analysis was in terms of meeting signal-to-interference ratio criterion values on an average power basis in the intermediate frequency. This caused the results to depend on standard spread spectrum processing gain equations; similar results would apply to a direct sequence system. The allocatable frequency band was 406-420 megahertz. The results indicate clear superiority for the single sideband system. The frequency hopping system could not obtain sufficient spread spectrum processing gain to overcome frequency hopping interference at the base stations. Statistics of transmission overlap, signal level, interference level, and signal-to-interference ratio at base and mobile receivers are given.
