Developing the Biotechnology Component of Engineering: Needs and Opportunities. A Report of a National Work Shop Held at Raleigh, North Carolina on April 14-15, 1983

Papers that were delivered at the workshop, focusing on such topics as the roles of universities in biotechnology, an approach to industry-university cooperation in biotechnology engineering, and challenges to biotechnology in industry and universities, are presented. Participants agreed on five major points: (1) more funding is needed if the full promise of biotechnology is to be met; (2) the United States is vulnerable in its position as world leader in this field; (3) education of more scientists is a major need; (4) the challenges can be met only through cooperative efforts of universities, industry, and government; and (5) the promise of biotechnology is great but must be critically reviewed from a cost-benefit approach. Workshop participants are listed and background sketches are provided. An agenda is included.
