Assessment of Ultrasound B-Mode Imaging for Detection and Quantification of Atherosclerotic Lesions in Arteries of Animals

This report describes preliminary experiments in detecting and monitoring changes in the arteries of nonhuman primates which have been fed atherogenic diets. Included are experimental results of studies to document intraobserver variability in measuring lumen diameters and arterial wall thicknesses, and to measure changes in these parameters over time using 10 MHz B-mode ultrasound instrument. Also described is a standard operating procedure for noninvasive monitoring of carotid artery changes over a 2-year period of time, and data on the effect of decalcification on human endarterectomy specimens.
