Effect of Liquid Tin-Zinc on the Drilling Parameters of Several Alloys

The effect of liquid tin-zinc on the drilling parameters of 304SS, Inconel 718, 4340 steel, M2 high speed steel, Ti-6Al-4V, and a free machining brass was evaluated and compared to the drilling parameters in air at 25C and 220C and in a cutting oil. A constant load drilling test was used and the penetration rate, torque and specific energy were determined for each material-environment combination. The following effects of drilling tin-zinc were observed: (1) Under constant load drilling, the penetration rates increased in tin-zinc, relative to other environments; (2) Using penetration versus load data, the load needed to achieve a given penetration rate decreased in tin-zinc; (3) The specific energy for drilling was less in tin-zinc than in air or oil for 304SS but not for the other materials; (4) The fracture toughness of the materials was unaffected by drilling in tin-zinc; and (5) Tin-zinc was found to reduce the extent of shear band formation and tearing at the edge of the chips.
