Foods of Rainbow Smelt Larvae 'Osmerus mordax' in Nearshore Waters of Northwestern Lake Huron

Larvae of rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) in nearshore waters of northwestern Lake Huron did not feed until they were 7 mm long. Smaller (7-13 mm) larvae first ate copepod nauplii about 0.26 mm long. Larger larvae (14-23 mm long) ate larger prey. Smelt larvae ate few algae and no rotifers.
