Second Refuge Site Location 22 (38JA61) Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, Jasper County, South Carolina

摘要

Excavations in 1979 and 1980 yielded 20th century surface debris and minimal 19th century artifacts; surface to ca. 120 cm below site datum yielded, in appropriate chronological order of distribution, Irene, Savannah Burnished Plain, Late and Middle Woodland Cordmarked, and Deptford pottery. Faunal assemblage indicates continuation of Late Archaic riverine/estuarine emphases. The environment was upper estuarine to riverine with fluctuation according to sea level changes. Status of the site as Refuge Phase, the excellent faunal preservation, and the virtually unique evidence of sea level fluctuation during the period of occupation establish this as a highly significant site, fully eligible for the National Register.
