Incarcerated Rapists: Exploring a Sociological Model

A sociological model in which rape can be viewed as behavior learned through interaction was explored. The investigation focused on whether, in addition to the individual pathology of offenders, rape may also be related to cultural factors including male expectations regarding appropriate male and female sex roles and sexual behavior. One hundred incarcerated rapists and a contrast group of 50 nonsex, nonviolent offenders were interviewed. Rapists' attitudes toward variables related to rape were identified through the use of various scales. These attitudes were compared to the interactional episode itself, as it was perceived by the rapist, in an attempt to understand how attitudes impinge on interpretations of the crime.
