Health Hazard Evaluation Report HETA 81-157-1516, Inland Steel Company, East Chicago, Indiana

A health hazard evaluation at Inland Steel Corporation (SIC-3312), East Chicago, Indiana was conducted in April, 1981 and September, 1982. The evaluation was requested confidentially because of concern of a possible increase in deaths from leukemia among workers at the facility. In the initial survey, information was sought from company records and worker interviews to identify possible carcinogenic exposures. No exposure to benzene (71432) or other possible leukemogens could be identified. The authors state that due to the absence of a known leukemogen and the small size of the cohort, no conclusion can be drawn from the data.
