Evaluation of the Cancer Information Service: Implications for Health Behavior and Health Services Research. Executive Summary

This dissertation grant research project evaluated the Cancer Information Service (CIS). Undiagnosed, symptomatic people who called the CIS during a six week period in 1983 were monitored for six months to assess their health-related behavior. Two questionnaires were sent to 353 callers, one approximately two weeks after the call and the second approximately four months after the call. Also, 56 people were interviewed by phone. Approximately half the sample received a follow-up letter from the CIS reinforcing their behavior. Patterns of results across independent and dependent variables are discussed within the context of health behavior research and applied concerns of the CIS.
