Comparison of the VA (Veterans Administration) Medical Diagnoses Recodes Based on the Eighth versus the Ninth Revisions of the International Classification of Diseases

At the beginning of FY81 the VA changed medical diagnostic classification systems from the international standard ICDA 8 to the revised standard coding scheme ICD-9-CM. On September 24, 1980, data were collected on 13,595 hospital patients coded simultaneously under both schemes. This report compares the diagnostic data recoded in both classification schemes.
