摘要

The Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964 and its effects on natural processes and on the manmade environment provides the opportunity to analyze the value of experience and the relevance of research conducted by various agencies to minimize loss of life and property and to set guidelines for short- and long-range recovery from a major disaster. The study focuses on the role of scientific information, public administration, and planning efforts to mitigate the effects of earthquakes, based on the experience of the 1964 Alaska earthquake. The report discusses key obstacles to implementation of risk mitigation measures, suggests a role for seismic risk in the comprehensive planning and administrative decision making processes, and offers recommendations designed to promote implementation of seismic risk mitigation.
