Secondary Analysis: 1981 National Survey of Physician Assistants. Final Report and Executive Summary

Analyses were conducted to describe and report recent trends in the personal background and practice characteristics of Physician Assistants, the impact of increasing numbers of women on PA practice and the involvement of PAs in non-primary care specialties. Of the 10,626 graduate PAs eligible for this study, 6,056 (57%) responded to the survey. As suggested by a follow-up survey of a sample of nonrespondents, the 1981 survey may be moderately under-reported for minority PAs, inactive PAs, or early graduates, and PAs located in the northeast. Otherwise, the 1981 data appear representative of the overall practice care characteristics of the PA profession.
