Interim Management Report of History and Oral History Studies Conducted by Powers Elevation at the Fort Carson Pinon Canyon Maneuver Area, Las Animas County, Colorado

Archival and oral sources are used to describe the history of an area to be impacted by military activities. Collected data address questions of chronology, settlement patterns, economic activities, demographic patterns, and culture. Descriptive themes include fur trade/prairie commerce, Spanish/Mexican influence, American military expeditions, Anglo/Hispanic settlement, ranching, and farming. Despite early Hispanic travels, most documented history focuses on the physical remains, events, and trends of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specific sites identified from the literature are recommended for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
