Methyl Salicylate: Reproduction and Fertility Assessment in CD-1 Mice When Administered by Gavage Final Report, (November 1984)

Methyl Salicylate (MS) is an oily, colorless, yellowish or reddish liquid with wintergreen flavor. It is used in perfumery and flavoring candies. It is toxic when ingested straight. The average lethal dose is 10 mls for children and 30 mls for adults. The common symptoms of toxicity include nausea, vomiting, acidosis, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, convulsions, and in ultimate cases, death. In the study, the reproductive toxicity of MS was evaluated according to the Fertility Assessment by Continuous Breeding (FACB) protocol.
