Scientific and Technical Work Force in Trade and Regulated Industries Shows Major Shift in Occupational Composition: 1979-82

This report analyzes trends in employment of scientists, engineers, computer specialists, and technicians for surveys of establishments in trade and regulated industries represented in Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) categories 41, 42, and 44-59 that include transportation, communications, utilities, and trade. Employment of scientists, engineers, computer specialists, and technicians grew faster than the total work force in these industries between 1979 and 1982--6.3 percent versus 0.4 percent per year. Most of this growth has resulted from increased utilization of these personnel relative to other workers.
