Distribution of the Income Loss Occasioned by Recession: A National Income Accounting Framework

The report presents the distribution of income loss occasioned by 1970-71, 1974-75, and 1980-82 recessions between profits and employee compensation; distribution of employee compensation loss among unemployment, slower labor force growth, shorter work hours, and slower real wage gains. It uses special Current Population Survey tabulations to estimate 1982 earnings loss due to recession by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, industry, occupation, family status, separates impact on profits of higher interest costs from impact of recession-caused output reductions.
