Ocean Disposal Systems for Sewage Sludge and Effluent

For coastal cities, the ocean disposal option for municipal waste water and sludge is often attractive, provided water quality is maintained at acceptable standards. There are a variety of methods to dispose of sewage and sludge in the ocean (e.g., submarine pipelines and surface vessels for dumping) and a choice of locations, distance from shore, and diffusers to enhance initial mixing. The purpose of this report is to explain how ocean disposal can be designed as an engineering system to meet water quality requirements.
