Substitution of Platinum Metal Crucibles Used in the Glass Industry

A research and development study was conducted wherein commercial tin oxide (SnO2) was evaluated as crucible material for melting optical-quality glasses. Several sintering aids for SnO2 were examined. Laboratory-scale SnO2 crucibles were fabricated by dry pressing, slip casting, and isostatic pressing processes. Corrosion resistance, surface characteristics, and the forming process itself were evaluated using the scanning electron technique.
